Guidance for reopening your museum

Author: Emma Halford-Forbes, Industrial Museums Scotland Coordinator

We’re hope these resources and links will help museums feel better prepared to reopen.

The Scottish Government guidance for reopening the museums, galleries and heritage is here

We've developed some resources we hope will help museums feel better prepared to reopen:

The We're Good To Go mark is a great way to let visitors know you've put plans in place to reopen safely - apply here.

Museums and galleries will be expected to gather visitor information as part of the Test & Protect scheme - find out more.

And further resources from elsewhere in the sector:

  • There's a great blog on reopening here from Gairloch Museum.
  • Find out more about Museums Galleries Scotland's marketing toolkit and campaign for reopening the sector.
  • The Association of Independent Museum has created a great resource to go alongside the English guidance for museums reopening - find out more. This is already pretty applicable to Scotland, though it may get properly adapted in due course. This is the best and most digestable reopening guidance I've seen yet.
  • Bletchley Park has produced a great risk assessment here

There’s a blog here about volunteers in museums – more resources to follow.

We’ve been involved in various discussions about responsibilities to paid staff. If you haven’t done so already, it would be wise to take some human resource advice. Here are some links:*

There’s been an amount of chat about hand sanitiser units. At either end of the scale there’s this and this.*

We will update these resources and will add more as we get feedback and as the sector continues to plan to reopen. Please get in touch if you have something to add!
