Remembering Piper Alpha Panel Discussion

On the 31st anniversary of the world’s worst off-shore oil rig disaster in which 167 people lost their lives, the Scottish Maritime Museum will host a panel discussion in remembrance of the Piper Alpha disaster.

On Saturday 6 July the panel will explore the events and legacy of the disaster. The panel will feature Roy Carey, Sue Jane Taylor, and Stephen McGinty.

The Panel:

• Roy Carey is one of the 61 surviving Piper Alpha platform workers and has also donated objects and photographs to the “Age of Oil” Exhibition.
• “Age of Oil” visual artist Sue Jane Taylor was chosen to design the Piper Alpha memorial statue which was unveiled in North Sea Memorial Rose Garden, Hazelhead Park, Aberdeen in 1991.
• Stephen McGinty is the writer and assistant producer of BAFTA award winning film, ‘Piper Alpha: Fire in Night’, based on his book of the same name.

This event is running in conjunction with the “Age of Oil” exhibition hosted in association with National Museums Scotland. Currently on display at the Scottish Maritime Museum, Irvine, “Age of Oil” brings together a rich display of artworks, films, diary excerpts and objects from Sue Jane Taylor’s residencies on North Sea oil platforms over the past decade.
