Catch of the Day: Fish, Food and Sustainability
An exhibition exploring the topic of fish, its role in the Scottish diet, and examining the ways in which our consumption of fish, and thereby the fishing industry itself, may evolve in future.
Catch of the Day: Fish, Food and Sustainability is the latest exhibition to run at the Scottish Fisheries Museum, curated by postgraduate students on the St Andrews Museum and Gallery Studies programme. We’re taking a look at how the role of fish in the Scottish diet has changed over the past century and what changes there might be to come. Learn how catches have fluctuated and how this has been driven by developments in tastes, technology and availability. We’re also looking at how ever-increasing levels of plastic in the oceans is affecting marine life.
Through the use of exciting interactives, digital displays, and little-seen objects, we trace the story of the Scottish fishing industry and how it is evolving with the times. We’ve joined up with the Smart History team at St Andrews University to set up a virtual reality set where you can find out for yourself what it feels like to move as a fish – running every Saturday over the course of the exhibition.
A full events programme accompanies the exhibition, including family and adult gyotaku (Japanese fish printing), children’s craft workshops, and a Fish and Food Fair as part of the national Festival of Museums on 19th May. For more information, please see:
