Button Sampler for No. 1 Uniform button

Object Category
Uniform
Object Name
Button Sampler
Description

For many years this object was described as a wax seal, however in 2019 it was noted that this was not possible as the impression in the wax would be in reverse. We now believe it may be a button sampler - that being a button design on a fancy handle to allow Commissioners to inspect a button struck from a new die. This design of button was issued for No. 1 uniforms from at least 1868 and used until the end of lightkeeping in 1998.
