Description

While lighthouses were functional buildings, their engineers often added otherwise unnecessary decoration to designs. These lion heads were used by Alan Stevenson (1807-65) on the astragal joins of his lantern panes. Only the keepers would have been able to enjoy them at close inspection! Alan was inspired by the classical world with most of his lighthouses having architectural features inspired by Greco-Egyptian design.
