Iron and Steel
On 9 July 1918 16 year old John McCabe saved many lives from an in-rush of peat and water ('moss') at Stanrigg Colliery near Airdrie by raising the alarm. The disaster still claimed 19 lives. Two of the victims were just 14 years old.
This watch was presented to John McCabe by the Carnegie Hero Fund Trust. There is an etched inscription inside the lid reading: "PRESENTED BY / THE TRUSTEES OF THE / CARNEGIE HERO FUND / TO / JOHN McCABE / AIRDRIE / FOR HEROISM IN SAVING / HUMAN LIFE 9TH JULY / 1918".
