Thomas Shanks & Co. was a renowned machine tool manufacturer. This plate edge planer helped make vessels watertight by cutting the edges of iron and steel plates so that they fitted neatly together. This planer was used in the boilermaking department of Paisley engineering firm AF Craig & Co.
