The SMMart Spotlight Exhibition at the Scottish Maritime Museum on the Harbourside in Irvine, North Ayrshire, showcases 20 works of art acquired during the first half of the Museum’s three year SMMArt project to develop a nationally significant art collection to enrich the national maritime collection.

The SMMart Spotlight Exhibition, which runs until Monday 20th March, also features works by George Wyllie, Kate Downie, Will Maclean, Joyce W. Cairns, Tom McKendrick, Benno Schotz and Patricia Cain amongst others.

‘The Pier at Cove - Loch Long’ by Francis Cadell was acquired by the Scottish Maritime Museum through the SMMart: Enriching the Imagery of Scotland's Maritime Heritage project, which has been made possible by a grant from the Heritage Lottery Fund’s Collecting Cultures programme, and with the assistance of Art Fund and the National Fund for Acquisitions.

Other artworks in the SMMart Spotlight Exhibition displayed across the Museum’s 1872 Linthouse building include a series of original travel posters such as a scene of Rothesay designed by Frank Henry Mason for London and North Eastern Railway (LNER) in 1927, and the oldest painting acquired so far, ‘On the Clyde’ by James Francis Williams which dates from 1830.

Paintings by two former Govan shipyard workers turned artists – Jim Collins from Irvine and James S. Davis from Beith – complete the exhibition.
